Main Article Content
Abstract
Purpose – This study aims to examine the application of rhetorical elements (balāghah) in Tafsir Al-Azhar by Prof. Dr.
Hamka, focusing on how the rhetorical and aesthetic aspects of the Arabic language are employed to enhance the
interpretative meaning of the Qur’an. The study highlights Hamka’s adaptive use of classical balāghah theory within a
contemporary exegetical framework.
Design/methodology/approach – This research adopts a qualitative descriptive method with a library-based
approach. By analyzing rhetorical devices such as nidā’ (vocative expression), isti‘ārah (metaphor), ta’kīd (emphasis), and
tibāq (contrast), the study explores how Hamka integrates linguistic artistry with moral and spiritual values relevant to
Indonesian society.
Findings – The study reveals that Hamka does not merely apply balāghah in a textual sense, but revitalizes it as a
communicative and spiritual medium that bridges classical Arabic eloquence and modern Indonesian realities. His
interpretative style demonstrates that classical rhetorical theory remains significant for developing contextual and
communicative Qur’anic exegesis.
Originality/value – The originality of this research lies in its analysis of Tafsir Al-Azhar through the lens of balāghah,
offering a renewed perspective on how rhetorical beauty can serve as both a hermeneutical and pedagogical tool in
contemporary Qur’anic interpretation.
